Buckhannon-Upshur has been represented well over the decades when it comes
to WVMEA Honor Ensembles, pulling in an impressive 16 Honor Finalist titles since 1969. These titles were earned through all
divisions of the B-U Music Department, including the B-U JHS Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Richard Lawson, the
B-UHS Concert, Symphonic, and Freshman Bands, under the direction of Mr. Greg Kennedy, and the B-UHS Concert
Choir under the direction of Mr. James Knorr. The article below tells of the newest ensemble to be added to the Buckhannon-Upshur Wall of Fame, the B-U Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Danny
Williams.
Buckhannon-Upshur
High School Jazz Band
Named 2005 All-State Honor Jazz Ensemble Buckhannon-Upshur
High School’s Jazz Band has been selected as the state Jazz Honor Band and performed at the West Virginia Music Educator’s
Conference. The three-day event, starting Thursday, takes place this year at Morgantown. Honor groups, including bands, choirs
and show choirs, will present their music throughout the conference in the Creative Arts Center on the Evansdale campus of
WVU.
“We were selected from the 15 or so bands that were adjudicated at three regional festivals on Saturday,"
said director Danny Williams. "This is quite a privilege. Since 1969, when Buckhannon sent both the high school and junior
high concert bands, we have been chosen 16 times, with junior high and high school groups, plus the high school choir going
two years in a row. I think this is the first time our jazz band has been selected.”
Congratulations to
the Jazz Band! This is a fine example why our band program
is considered to be "The Pride of Upshur County!"
